CLOSING MASS OF THE SPECIAL YEAR DEDICATED TO SAINT JOSEPH

As part of the Special Year dedicated to Saint Joseph, the Oratory will be visited by His Eminence, Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., Undersecretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

Cardinal Czerny will preside at a Mass in French on Sunday, November 21 at 11 a.m. in the Basilica.

Cardinal Michael Czerny

Michael Czerny is the current undersecretary of the Migrants Section of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development in Rome. Born in Brno in the former Czechoslovakia in 1946, his family immigrated to Canada two years later. Ordained into the Society of Jesus in 1973, the Canadian Jesuit founded and chaired the Jesuit Center for Faith and Social Justice in Toronto for ten years.

He has carried out missions in Czechoslovakia and France, notably in Jean Vanier’s Arche community. Shocked by the death of several of his brothers in El Salvador, he asked to be sent there where he took part in the negotiations that ended the civil war in 1992. He participated in another UN mission to Haiti after the 1995 coup d’état. Called to Rome, Father Michael Czerny remained until 2002 at the Secretariat for Social Justice within the Jesuit General Curia. He was then sent to Kenya, Africa, where he founded a support network for Jesuits fighting the AIDS pandemic. In 2016, Pope Francis made him his collaborator in the Migrants section of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
