A poor man in whom God is recognized

In October 1995, delegates from the poorest families in several countries came to Quebec to speak at the UN. Philippe, one of the leaders who was working to promote the dignity of the poorest individuals and families through his involvement in the ADT Fourth World* movement, and who was preparing to welcome them, wrote to me: “We feel very close to Brother André’s commitment and spirituality, and we hope that these delegates will be able to visit the Oratory and discover Brother André’s life.”

At the beginning of August, Saint Brother André’s birthday reminds us that God is like that. He often chooses the smallest to reveal to us the richness of his love that lies dormant in every human being, whether healthy or sick, rich or poor, educated or not, believer or non-believer. Brother André is one of those humble individuals whom everyone feels close to, given how his welcoming nature unveils a fraternal and loving presence.

What amazes me is to see how, since the beginnings of the Oratory, Brother André has inspired countless collaborators to realize his great project, which had its source in the very heart of God’s love: to build a house dedicated to Saint Joseph, a house of prayer, an open door where everyone can feel at home and welcomed as they are. There, in silence and peace, Brother André leads us to this God the Father, attentive to all suffering and all generosity, even the most secret, a Father full of mercy. This Father reveals to us all our dignity, he who has made us like himself and who, in his Son Jesus Christ, has made us his beloved daughters and sons. Through his whole way of being and acting, Brother André reminds us that it is in faith and mutual trust that we will succeed in assuring everyone, especially the most destitute, the families most crushed by misery and hardship, a fraternal and loving presence that restores to each person his or her dignity and place.

This humble Brother André has inspired, and continues to inspire, so much solidarity around his work! These are all people who have great confidence in Saint Joseph and Brother André, and who share it with those around them. They make it a point of honor to make them known and to invite those around them to pray to them.

On the occasion of the 178th anniversary of the birth of Saint Brother André, we rejoice and thank the Lord for so much goodness and beauty. We are grateful to those who generously continue to support Brother André’s work with their prayers and financial support, however small.

Let us give thanks to God who has given us Brother André, this powerful intercessor, this witness, this friend.
