Implementation of the New Policy on Contributions by Tour Operators
Montréal, February 11, 2008 - Beginning January 1, 2008, Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal has been requesting a financial contribution from tour operators who transport organized groups of visitors on site. During the year 2008, they are being asked to contribute the sum of $1 per visitor. This contribution will increase to $3 on January 1, 2009. In addition, an amount of 50 cents per person is requested from tour operators who stop their busses on the grounds to allow for photography without visiting Saint Joseph's Oratory.
This policy was inaugurated after consulting with tour operators so that they might contribute to the financial support of Saint Joseph's Oratory, a not-for-profit religious organization.
Saint Joseph's Oratory is a notable patrimonial, religious, and tourist venue known around the world for its ministry to pilgrims. It affords one of the most beautiful vistas of Montréal and two million people come here every year. Its maintenance and improvement require significant investments on the part of the Congregation of Holy Cross, who are in charge of this national historic monument. This policy will permit the tourist industry to play a supporting role in the financial efforts of the Oratory so that it may continue to provide infrastructures and services for effective accommodations at this tourist complex.
The administrators of Visitor and Pilgrim Services of Saint Joseph's Oratory are responsible for negotiating and concluding individual agreements with tour operators concerning the reception of these contributions.
Unescorted visitors and pilgrims coming to the Oratory on their own already support the financial well-being of the oratory since they are invited to make contributions for parking or to make donations during their visit.
